What is a Postpartum Doula?

Someone who listens

As your postpartum doula, I promise to listen to your birth story, and validate your feelings and traumas. I want to be there to offer non-judgmental emotional support after whatever kind of birth you’ve just experienced. I am always happy to offer my insight when needed, but will first and foremost hear you out and allow you to be the guide in your postpartum recovery.

Someone who promotes healing

Whether you have a stitches from a c-section, or tearing from a vaginal birth, I will gladly share my knowledge in evidence based, natural healing techniques. We will work together to come up with the best steps towards postpartum healing for you.

Someone who informs and offers resources

You probably have a stack of papers by now…collecting dust, full of informational packets, samples, breastfeeding how-to’s and much more. As your doula, I will help connect you with trusted professionals, websites, products, and more. And instead of stapled papers and pamphlets, I share all my resources in a comprehensive and summarized online list. I will give you recommendations on how to get connected in your community, what steps to take if you think you see warning signs from a mood disorder, and much more practical advice. With so many differing opinions and information, my job is to give you the tools and help you stay informed about what is best for you and your little one.

Someone who facilitates

It has been recognized that having a great support system in place after you give birth can significantly lower your chances of having postpartum depression, and can also help strengthen the bond between you, your partner, and your new baby. As your postpartum doula I will be that support you need in those first few weeks and month after birth. I will not replace the role of your partner, but rather come alongside both of you to help facilitate healthy routines for your new family.

Why hire a Postpartum Doula?

As a pregnant woman, you may have noticed childbirth gets a lot of hype. You might be attending workshops, reading books, and going to appointments regularly in preparation for the big day, but what happens after that? Many women feel like they are thrust back into normal life with a small human they don’t even know yet, and sky high emotions, and are expected to carry on like nothing ever happened. Lose the baby weight, host friends and family, post all of the highlights on Instagram, and smile like you’ve got it all together.

Did you know that North America has the worst postpartum recovery practices in the world? That’s right. Many cultures around the world acknowledge that the postpartum period is so tender and that a new mother’s body needs to properly heal before getting back to “business as usual”.

As your postpartum doula, my job is to help you transition into your new normal. Whether that means making a nutritious meal for you while you rest, holding baby while you take self-care time, or sharing practical information that will help you make the best decisions for you and your family. I will do my best to help foster a nurturing, and non-judgemental environment for those first few weeks after your new arrival.

“Whenever and however you intend to give birth, your experience will impact your emotions, your mind, your body and your spirit for the rest of your life.”
